Track and Field

Phoenix athletes compete in track and field competitions all year round. In the winter there are a limited number of indoor events available mainly at the Lea Valley Sports Centre in London. Come the summer there are many more opportunities available to athletes. The outdoor track season can start as early as April and run until the end of September. Although Phoenix does take part in Sussex Track and Field Leagues, we favour competitions for developing athletes where the quality is guaranteed such as BMC meetings and Championship races. The emphasis at Phoenix is on the individual reaching their full potential around long term goals and as such training is geared to gradual progression.

National Rankings

Many Phoenix athletes feature prominently in the UK rankings. As of November 2016 we have four athletes in the U20 800m top 12: Spencer Thomas 1:48.24, Finley Bigg 1:49.45, Archie Davis (all-time fastest UK 17-year old over 800m indoors) 1:49.74, and Dan Eeles 1.50.88.

British Milers Club Meetings (BMC)

The BMC organise middle distance races around the country. The races they put on are paced races so that athletes may improve their pb’s. They cater for a wide range of abilities. Phoenix actively supports the BMC and encourages its athletes to take part in their events. As a club we have always put the emphasis on improving the individual’s ability and these races mean that athletes have the opportunity to run against guaranteed quality opposition of the same or better quality, this means that our athletes are in a better position to go on and race at higher championship level races in the future. If you achieve a BMC standard you can join the British Milers Club, and Phoenix will pay for membership subject to certain criteria.

In 2016 the following athletes amongst others achieved notable times in BMC races:

Spencer Thomas(U20) 800m 1:48.52
Finley Bigg (U20) 800m 1:49.45
Robbie Fitzgibbon (U23) 800m 1:49.90  3000m 8:22.38

Open Meetings

Phoenix athletes travel to open meetings all over the country. At these meetings you can take part in any event you want. The main open meeting that we target as a club is the Watford Open which also incorporates some BMC races.

Gus Kennedy U20 400m 48.71

County Championships

The main County Championships take place in May. The U13s and the Masters have their Championships in July. We encourage all our athletes to take part in these championships as this gives the best local athletic opportunities within the county and is a good stepping stone for aspiring athletes to go on to national competitions.

In 2011 the following athletes amongst others achieved county medals:

Billy White U15 1500m Gold 800m Silver
Will Durkin U17 800m Gold

Charlie Grice U20 800m Gold

South of England Championship

The South of England Championship takes place in June with the venue moving around the region so that athletes travailing from further afield get the option of a championship closer to home. This has always been one of the best opportunities for aspiring athletes to get an opportunity of competition outside of the county, but still in the local area.

In 2011 the following athletes amongst others achieved Southern medals:

Dan Stepney Senior 800m Bronze
Charlie Grice U20 800m Gold
Max Pickard U20 Steeple Silver

England Athletics Championship

In 2011 the fowling athletes competed:

Charlie Grice U20 1500m Silver

UK National championships

The UK Championships as well as being a championship in its own right also doubles as the qualifying race for European/Commonwealth/World/Olympics depending on the year.

Charlie Grice has won the UK Senior 1500m title for the past three years and competed for GB at the Rio Olympics where he reached the final of the 1500m.

English Schools

The English Schools is the top end of season track championship for junior athletes, and as such you have to satisfy qualifying times to make it into the Sussex team, Phoenix prides itself on operating a youth/junior training group that has a high number of athletes competing at these championships.

In 2011 the fowling athletes competed:

Sam Kitchen Junior Boy 800m
Billy White Junior Boy 800m
Max Pickard Senior Boy 1500m
Charlie Grice Senior Boy 1500m Gold
Will Durkin Senior Boy 800m

Sussex U13s Track and Field League

This league provides excellent competition for the younger age group. It consists of three midweek evening meetings and a final in September. This year there will also be a Sussex U15s league. We feel it is important for the younger athletes in the club to compete with their team mates so that the social aspect of athletics is mixed with competition; this makes the whole experience more fun.

Sussex Masters Track and Field League

This league also consists of midweek evening meetings across the county. We have individuals using the league format to give themselves local races against competition in their age category, and a change from road racing in the summer months.
