She has been struggeling with an ankle problem for a while and didn't manage to get in all the training she wanted to, so it's a great result for her! Last weekend the senior men were a very credible 17th at the Southern Road Relays with fantastic bookend runs from new AG World Triathlon Champion Sam Wade with 18.43 and Marathon Man Jon Pepper 18.16 (13th quickest overall). Just off their summer break track athletes Charlie Grice and Dan Stepney gave real team performances, with James Miles and Jake stepping up to the plate last minute to make sure the team qualified very well.

Also a solid performance by the U17’s grab a notable 7th place. Consistent runs by Jake Alger, Sam Kitchen and Archie Davis, who was drafted in from the U15’s to replace Billy White, set up our recent U17 National 800m Champion Spencer Thomas in a good position for the anchor leg to ensure 7th place.  A big well done to the team!

Newbiggin Triathlon was a qualifier for 2014 ETU European Sprint Distance Championships to be held in Kitzbuhl, Austria. Competitors had a long 200m slog through soft sand to get to transition and then struggled through a windy undulating 3 lap bike course followed with a undulating run along the seafront. Wes's timing chip came off during the bike leg so his bike time includes T2. His team also just missed out on finishing 3rd in their category by the narrowest of margins as the results show a dead heat!

In the lead up to the event, blue green algae was found in the lake so they were forced into holding a duathlon instead of a triathlon which didn't suit Colin as he was nursing an ankle injury. But with painkillers at the ready, it didn't stop him showing us what he can do when his bike doesn't let him down as he won his age group! Tom Hopkins and Richard Moult from Phoenix tuck on the Ghurkha Trailwalk UK Challenge along with Tom's wife Sarah and close friend Barbora. Fortunately the weather held back in comparison to what was forecast meaning they only got a little soaked instead of completely drenched! The walk was unbelievably tough and a real test of mental endurance with mussels aching and sleep deprivation taking its toll, throwing in the towel must have been plaguing them especially with one of the stages being around 5km longer than expected!! Regardless, the whole team finished with the help of their dedicated support crew in a respectable 26hours 9mins. It's a truly amazing event and well worth a go!

A glorious summers evening saw a small band of Phoenix runners tackle the annual Black Cap 5 handicap. A big thanks to Liz for organising this in such a busy schedule which unfortunately meant that numbers were down on previous years. Thanks to Sue for the timekeeping and Colin for the handicapping which wasn’t as accurate as previous years but all finished within 5 mins of each other. Emma easily won the handicap and posted the fastest ladies split whilst Donald stormed through the field in the fastest time but couldn’t quite catch all. Whilst we all retired to the pub for a cool down and to contemplate the beer mile next week the herd of Cows surrounding the start decided to head off for their race...some looking livelier than Andrew H had earlier.

Colin Simpson, Tim Woodman, and Claire also travelled out to Alanya for the Sprint Championship. Colin managed to have a good swim but then came into some problems on the bike leg when his crank fell off! After trying to ride one legged with the chain repeated falling off, he bravely jogged the remaining 2miles bare foot and in 30 deg heat.

Some fantastic competing was seen at the Phoenix Open Track Meeting at Withdean Stadium, May 8th. Athletes of all ages competed in events from 100 metres, 800 metres, 1500 metres, 3 km and steeplechase runs to standing long jump and long jump.

Phoenix was out in force with record numbers of runners in the junior races.
In the closed 100m Sophia Warner narrowly missed the qualifying time for the World Para Athletics Championships with what was still a great run.
In the very competitive 800 metre BMCA race Matt Favers showed great ability to accelerate at pace in the last 50 metres to win.

Yet further success, in the form of personal bests, was seen for Billy White in the A race and Spencer Thomas looking good to win the B. And there was yet another outstanding front run by Almi Nerurkar in the under 13 girls 800 metres.

This is part of the West Sussex Fun Run league and is always popular with Phoenix young athletes who can race in their appropriate age category.

Performance of the day was by Almi Nerurkar who set a new course record for the U13 girls 1500M. 5:11 is the new mark. Clubmates Holly Luscombe and Izzie Whitelegg were second and third respectively.

The other winner was Chloe Watson in the U15 girls 2,300M. Only one other competitor but Chloe ran a fine 8:52 non-the-less.

Second places were taken by Deaglan Shinn in the U13 boys 1500M and Milly Dickenson in the U11 girls 1500M.

Of course there were may other young Phoenix runners taking part.

In the adult 5K event there were just two competitors from Phoenix. Andy Bone came 29th in 19:00 and Andrew Haig (running for Southwick Strollers) came 116th in 22:06.

Wednesday 15th  May was the first league meet of the Sussex Under 13 Athletics Competition 2013 held at Lewes Leisure Centre. The weather was warm, not like the day before of rain. We had a fantastic turn-out of families to support our team, we took 26 girls to this meet which is the most we have ever taken. We were able to enter 5 girls’ relay teams. We also took a boys team of 7.
Both teams did extremely well finishing 3rd overall on the evening and we had 2 event on the night. Izzy Whitelegg in the 600m (01:58.7) and Owen May with the 150m (21.30).

The athletes were blessed with fantastic weather in comparison to the near artic conditions last year. In the long course Tom Hopkins and Malcolm Hughes finished 1st male and 1st male supervet. Will Flewett also finished 1st in his age group. Sean Scott also just missed out on 3rd after some confusion between a motorist and a marshal while exiting T1 resulting in Sean losing a shoe and missing a flying mount onto the bike. Wes Mechen also missed out on a 3rd place after forgetting his race number number out of T1 and having to run back into transition. Some splits are not shown in the full results so if either David Futter or Mark Walker know theirs, please email them to brightonphoenixmedia@gmail.com and they will be updated.

Another weekend, another marathon! Once again, the runners of VLM were blessed with perfect weather to tackle the 26.2 mile course and with Mo Farah pacing, the atmosphere would have been electric. Some great running from the Phoenix members with four finishing within three hours.

Again, please contact me (ritchiemoult@hotmial.com) if I have missed you off the list.

Lance Bellers and Paul Lawrence both recorded pbs. Lance reported back:

It went really well, we planned to run the first five miles together and it worked out perfectly, we ran 6:40s and kept it nicely under control, resisted anything silly early doors. Paul was happy to carry on so we did another couple, past seven mile marker but gradually I started to feel it so told him to push on which he did but we both had a great platform to go from by that point.

Weather wasn't great, very cold and wet with some wind on exposed bits but it wasn't the all-out onslaught I was dreading so could have been a lot worse. I think on a calm day though it would be very quick, worth bearing in mind. The start was a bit weird, had time to reset my watch before even crossing the actual timer line but apart from that was well run, lots of marshals and free cuppa at the end.

218th Paul Lawrence 1:25:49
288th Lance Bellers 1:28:27
725th Terry Avey 1:42:29 (After running the vets XC on Saturday!)

This was a fantastic outing for Phoenix at the opening Sussex Grand Prix event of the year. Jon Pepper was just a second behind the winner with Ian Leitch (4th) and Josh Guilmant (9th) winning the team event with the lowest points score anyone can remember. Not only that but Phoenix scored 10th and 20th with their B and C teams.
