This is a fast and flat seafront out and back run and an SGP race. It was a beautiful sunny morning with just a light headwind on the out run. Phoenix were represented by just three vet runners but punched way above our weight coming 7th out of 36 scoring men's teams.

Bruce Warren
ran a superb 28:58 for seventh place (2nd MV45)
Terry Avey ran 32:33 for 40th place (2nd MV60)
Andrew Haig ran 33:39 for 50th place (1st MV65)

The format for this is races on three consecutive days with a total distance adding up to 26.2 miles (ring any bells). The weather was miserable and each course was partially off-road so well done to the following, especially Sonal who bravely ran the two 10 milers.

Whilst thousands were pounding the streets of London, a group of Phoenix runners were enjoying the  Angmering Estate in West Sussex for the annual Angmering Bluebell 10k trial run, which this year also included a 10mile trial run.

As the race title suggests the race is very scenic, run mainly of road with a mixture of open countryside and woods paved in bluebells. The spectators however were probably more aware of the stunning scenery as the race conditions were hard, the hilly twisting course being made more challenging by a week of rain making large sections very muddy and slippery. In fact it was probably muddier than any of this year’s cross country courses!

In the 10k race James Atkinson finished third male, with Darren Elliot running only a week after the Brighton Marathon finishing a very credible 12th. In the 10 mile race Bruce Warren was third male and Catherine Bounds third female, with Bruce also taking first place in the Supervet category.

10k

James Atkinson 3rd male 39:08

Darren Elliot 12th male 42:12

10mile

Bruce Warren 3rd male 1:04:33

Catherine Bounds 3rd female 1:14:26

Terrific conditions this year and a good turnout (at least by the men) to take advantage. Unusually three Phoenix runners – Terry, Brian and Mike – did the double, by also running the Brighton Marathon the previous week.

Congratulations all.

It was another perfect day for distance running; maybe a little on the chilly side and perhaps that breeze was stiffer than ideal at times but the organisers have been blessed by fine weather for the third year running. Phoenix are pretty keen on this event and 25 of us joined in the fun. As you can see by the results, just over one and a half hours covered our finishing times indicating an impressive general standard. It was also great to see so many Phoenix members out on the course giving vocal support.

A hugely successful day for Phoenix athletes with representation at all levels.

U13 boys took gold with a fine individual course record by Archie Davis. U15 boys took bronze with Billy White storming to an individual course record. The story was repeated with the senior men taking gold and bronze medals. The A team set a fantastic course record with Ben Tickner lowering the individual record by a huge margin. The medals continued for the men with O50s taking bronze and O60s taking silver.

No medals for the female athletes but some fine performances non-the less with all age groups represented (even if the vet women raced in the wrong category!).

There is a full report in the news section and full results here.

Jon was in one of the leading groups and they were sent 500 metres in the wrong direction.
He was on for a 64 minutes. But looking good for his London Marathon debut

Phoenix is going through a golden spell at the moment and the showing at Brighton Half Marathon was no exception. It is officially confirmed that the course was 13.42 miles rather than 13.1 owing to a misplaced turn-around cone near Roedean. The organisers have now added adjusted chip times to the results. Since Ian Leitch was actually leading the race at 13.1 miles, he has a particular reason to be annoyed. Even so, second (Ian), third (Josh Guilmant) and fourth (Finn McNally) for Phoenix is quite an achievement. Terry Avey was first M60.

Archie Davis and the under 13 boys round off a triumphant league season with another win and individual gold for Archie and gold for the team.

In the U15 boys race, Billy White had another terrific win and takes gold for the season.

The U17 boys were bronze medalists.

Max Pickard had his second win of the season in the U20/senior men's race but sadly there was an incomplete team and they finish the season well away from the medals. The vets ditto.

The women have managed complete teams throughout the season and almost managed promotion from division 2. It's looking good for next year. Erica Martin ran well for fifth. Paule Kremer ranked fourth senior woman in the individual competition.

Phoenix girls have been a bit thin on the ground but the U13 girls managed a creditable fith team ranking for the season.

With the Sussex Championships the previous week and the Sussex Masters and Schools Championships on 21st January and the Southern x-country races on 28th, making the trip to Bexhill for the third county cross country league race on 14th January was a low priority for some athletes. Despite this, Phoenix managed to field athletes in all races with teams consolidating their league positions.
