The Junior Section is the largest in the club and is split into a number of groups:

  • one 'new starters' group of 9 to 10-year-olds
  • two groups of 11 to 13-year-olds, one of which is a 'new starters' group
  • one 'new starters' group of 13 to 15-year-olds for sprints and hurdles
  • one group of 13 to 17-year-olds for sprints
  • three groups of 13 to 17-year-olds for cross-country and middle-distance track.

    Sessions for 9 to 10-year-olds

The ‘new starters’ sessions for 9 to 10-year-olds are organised so that the athletes get the opportunity to do both track and field events and find the event that most suits them. We have special safety equipment, such as soft discus and javelins and low easy-to-knock-over hurdles, to help build up confidence before going on to use the real equipment.

    Sessions for 11 to 13-year-olds

The next groups up still concentrate on all aspects of the sport but training sessions go into each event in more detail, enabling young athletes to participate in local leagues as part of a team as well as competing as individuals in open events. During the winter months many compete in cross-country events.

    Sessions for 13 to 17-year-olds

Sessions for 13 to 17-year-olds concentrate on training geared at specific events. Phoenix began as a middle/long-distance running club and that is where our strength still lies. As a result, much of the training is developed with this in mind, with athletes being encouraged to compete in local, area and national competitions. However, young athletes whose strength lies in another discipline will be coached in their specific event. And where we don't have a coach for a particular event, we will do our utmost to bring one in to help out.

    How to join

As the Junior Section of the club is large, we do have a waiting list. This means that anyone wishing to join should first contact the club secretary Jackie Tucknott on 01273 298860. The How to join page gives further details.
